The Only Event Networking App Built for Africa
Whova costs $2,000 per event. Bizzabo needs an enterprise contract. Africa's tech ecosystem needs something different. Here's why we built Cardtag.
Frank Anthony
Founder, Cardtag
Africa's tech event scene has exploded. In the last three years alone, the number of tech conferences, summits, demo days, and community meetups across the continent has more than doubled. Nairobi, Lagos, Cape Town, Accra, Kigali — every major tech hub is hosting events every week.
But here's what's strange: the tools available for event networking were all built for a completely different market.
The Problem with Existing Event Apps
The big names in event networking — Whova, Bizzabo, Brella, Cvent — are excellent products. They handle registration, agenda management, matchmaking, sponsor tools, and analytics. They're trusted by enterprise conferences worldwide.
But they were built for events with five-figure budgets in North America and Europe. Here's what that means in practice:
Pricing that doesn't fit. Whova starts around $2,000 per event. Bizzabo and Brella use custom enterprise pricing — typically $5,000 to $50,000 per year. If you're running a 100-person meetup in Nairobi where tickets cost KES 500, spending $2,000 on an event app is not just expensive — it's absurd.
App downloads kill adoption. Most major platforms require attendees to download a native app. In markets where data costs matter and phone storage is precious, asking 200 attendees to download a 50MB app for a 3-hour event is a non-starter. Adoption rates for downloaded event apps in Africa consistently fall below 30%.
No Africa-specific context. These platforms don't understand the African professional ecosystem. They don't know that networking in Nairobi runs on WhatsApp, not LinkedIn DMs. They don't know that event organizers in Lagos care about mobile money integration, not Stripe. They don't know that community builders in Accra need a directory, not just a one-day event tool.
Why We Built Cardtag
I started attending tech events across East Africa in 2024. Africa Tech Summit. Community meetups. Founder dinners. Accelerator demo days.
Every single time, the same thing happened: great conversations, exchanged contacts, zero follow-up. The connections died within 48 hours.
I looked for a tool that could fix this. Everything I found was either too expensive, required an app download, or wasn't designed for how African professionals actually network.
So I built Cardtag.
What Makes Cardtag Different
Web-based. No download. Attendees join with a code — they open their browser, enter the code, and they're in. Works on any phone, any browser, any network. No app store, no 50MB download, no friction.
Free to start. Event organizers can create an event and activate the networking Arena for free. Pro and Organizer tiers exist for power users, but the core experience is free. A 30-person meetup in Accra gets the same tool as a 500-person summit in Nairobi.
Pre-event networking. Once attendees join, they can browse who else is attending — by name, role, and company. They send connection requests before the event starts. By the time they walk in, they already know who to find. No more wandering the room hoping to bump into the right person.
AI-powered follow-ups. After the event, every attendee gets personalized follow-up suggestions for each person they connected with. The follow-up message is drafted based on context — role, company, event. They review, edit if needed, and send. The follow-up rate jumps from under 10% to over 60%.
Event analytics for organizers. Organizers get a real-time dashboard showing connections made, industries represented, and engagement data. This isn't just nice to have — it's the data that convinces sponsors to renew. "We facilitated 340 meaningful connections" is a more powerful pitch than "200 people showed up."
Community and coworking support. Cardtag isn't just for one-day events. Communities can list themselves on our directory and get discovered by professionals across the continent. Coworking spaces can activate a persistent networking layer where members connect like WiFi — just enter a code.
The Numbers
From our pilot events:
89% of attendees connected with at least one person within the first 30 minutes. 47 attendees networked before the doors even opened. The average event facilitated 340 connections. Zero app downloads required.
One organizer's exact words: "Why doesn't every event have this?"
Who Cardtag Is For
Event organizers who want their attendees to actually connect — not just sit through panels and leave. Tech summits, demo days, conferences, workshops, community meetups.
Community builders who want their community discovered by professionals across Africa. List your community, get a public profile page, and when you host events, your members can network through the Arena.
Coworking spaces who want members to stop sitting 3 metres apart and never speaking. Activate Co-Space, give members a code, and let them discover each other.
Professionals who attend events and are tired of losing every connection they make. Create a free profile, join events with a code, and let AI handle your follow-ups.
The Africa Opportunity
Africa has 700+ million people under 30. The tech ecosystem is growing faster than any other region. Events are the backbone of how this ecosystem connects — founders meet investors, engineers meet hiring managers, builders meet collaborators.
But the networking infrastructure at these events is still stuck in the business card era. Paper cards that get lost. Phone numbers without context. LinkedIn requests that get ignored.
The continent needs an event networking platform built for its reality: mobile-first, web-based, affordable, and designed for how African professionals actually build relationships.
That's Cardtag.
