89 Connections in 2 Hours: Our First Cardtag Pilot Results

We ran Cardtag at a live tech event. Here's what happened — the numbers, the feedback, and what we learned.

We ran our first Cardtag pilot at a live tech event. Here's exactly what happened.

The Setup

The event was a tech meetup with around 100 attendees — founders, engineers, product managers, and investors. The organizer gave us permission to run Cardtag alongside the event. We printed a QR code, placed it at the entrance, and shared the join link in the event WhatsApp group 30 minutes before doors opened.

No app download. No mandatory signup. Just a code.

The Numbers

Within the first 30 minutes, 47 attendees had joined the Arena — before the event even started. They were browsing who else was coming, sending connection requests, and starting conversations from their phones while waiting in line.

By the end of the 2-hour networking session, the platform had tracked 89 connections. That's nearly one connection per attendee. The industry breakdown showed attendees from fintech, healthtech, edtech, SaaS, and venture capital — a cross-section of the Nairobi tech ecosystem.

89% of attendees who joined the Arena connected with at least one person. The average attendee made 3-4 connections. And when we sent follow-up suggestions after the event, 62% of attendees sent at least one follow-up message within 48 hours.

Compare that to the industry average: at most events, fewer than 10% of attendees follow up with the people they meet.

The Feedback

The organizer's reaction was immediate: "Why doesn't every event have this?"

What surprised us most was the pre-event networking. We expected most connections to happen during the event itself. Instead, nearly half of all connections were initiated before the doors opened. Attendees were browsing the attendee list, finding people in their industry, and setting up conversations in advance.

One attendee told us: "I connected with 8 people before the event started. I walked in knowing exactly who to find. That's never happened at any event I've attended."

Another said: "I usually stand near the coffee and hope someone talks to me. This time I could see who was there and approach the right people."

What We Learned

Pre-event networking is the killer feature. The ability to see who's attending and connect before arriving changes the entire event experience. Attendees show up with a plan instead of hoping for the best.

No app download is critical. We had 47 people join in the first 30 minutes. If we'd required an app download, we'd have had maybe 15. The web-based approach removes all friction.

AI follow-ups close the loop. The biggest surprise was the follow-up rate. 62% is extraordinary for event networking. The AI-suggested messages gave people a starting point — they didn't have to stare at a blank screen trying to remember what they talked about.

Organizers need data. The event report — showing connections, industries, and engagement — was almost more valuable to the organizer than the networking itself. It's the data they need for sponsor renewals and for proving event value.

What's Next

We're running more pilots across Nairobi, Lagos, and Cape Town. Every pilot teaches us something new about how African professionals network at events.

If you're organizing an event and want to run a pilot, reach out. The setup takes 5 minutes, it's free, and your attendees get a networking experience they've never had before.
